Over 100 years ago our sport was birthed in the Elbsandsteingebirge near Dresden, Germany. Shortly afterward, adventurous bands of German climbers discovered sandstone pinnacles over a wide radius, including Teplice in the Czech Republic. Of course, Germans then were too destitute to get proper accommodation and food, acquiring a bad reputation from sleeping in the woods and avoiding entrance fees. On the other hand, they occasionally managed four first tower ascents in a day by routes that are challenging still.

Aderspach has a very severe reputation for no fall 5.11 routes from the 1940s. These climbs are hard and runout but tame compared to climbs in the Elb. Steve Curtis continues to travel and search out these fantastic and historic climbing areas in Europe. Steve meets up with his friends for a few weeks of stimulating climbing in the sun.
